The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson has emphasized the need for change in the management of Ghana's economy and public finance, stating that "things must change".
In his inaugural address to staff of the Ministry, the Minister reflected on his return to the Ministry of Finance, where he previously served as Deputy Minister from 2013 to 2017.
“It is an honour to be back, it is both nostalgic, and humble feeling for me to be back here and I recall my time in this Ministry and what we were able to share together” he noted.
"We cannot afford to let the people down," Dr. Forson told staff, emphasizing the need for prudent financial management and economic reform.
He also declared that the "war against wasteful expenditure is long overdue," highlighting the importance of eliminating unnecessary spending to ensure that expenditure drives inclusive growth.
"This change must align with the vision of the President and I call on all of you to join me in pursuing that vision so that we can make Ghana a better place, and my job here is to lead the change to reset the economy and public finance. This is my charge to keep and I intend to do that and nothing more" Finance Minister said.
As Ghana works to recover from recent economic challenges, the Ministry of Finance plays a critical role in promoting economic growth and stability. Dr. Forson's speech was his first address to staff since his return to the Ministry, and it sets the tone for his tenure as Finance Minister.
With his extensive experience in public finance, macroeconomics, and fiscal policy, Dr Forson is well-positioned to lead Ghana towards a more resilient and inclusive economy .His appointment as Finance Minister has been seen as a strategic move by President Mahama to address Ghana's economic challenges.
The Chief Director of the Minister, Ms Eva Mends in her address indicated that, the staff of the Ministry were thrilled and honoured to welcome the Minister back to the Ministry.
“We are confident that, with your experience, invaluable expertise and perspectives, you will lead us to transform the economy and improve the lives of all Ghanaians” she remarked.
She gave the assurance of the Ministry’s unwavering support and dedication to the Minister noting that “if there is any group of people with the biggest mandate to lead the transformation of the economy, it is the team you see here” she assured.
